It is one of the most beautiful art collections in the world, with masterpieces by Raphael, Titian, Caravaggio, Bernini... But that’s not all. A number of small treasures are kept in the deposits which are located above the marvelous exhibition spaces of the Borghese Gallery and are currently not accessible: although they do not find a daily place in the exhibition layout, they will be finally visible to the public thanks to the initiative “Paintings descend the stairs” starting from 4 January.

For about a month, until 7 February, visitors will admire fifteen new works, exhibited in rotation: small paintings with figures and landscapes, on canvas or board, but also copper, mainly from the Flemish school. Descending the stairs, for example, are the works of a group of female painters, including the “Portrait of a Lady” by Lucia Anguissola, a delicate face that probably has the features of the artist’s sister Sofonisba, also a painter. Also noteworthy is “The Three Graces”, an oil on canvas recently attributed to Ventura Salimbeni: a landscape embellished with profiles of light in the center of which stands the three Graces of Greek and Roman mythology.
