The famous Maestro, Sir Antonio Pappano, conducts the Orchestra and Chorus of the National Academy of Santa Cecilia in Rossini Sacro e Profano.
On the program: The Armida, a challenging musical drama in three acts inspired by the character of the same name and the events of the poem Gerusalemme liberata (1575), by Torquato Tasso; the aria Quali accenti – Bella imago degli dèi from the Semiramis, a tragic melodrama in two acts based on Voltaire's Sémiramis and the life of Queen Semiramis; the aria E a tanto giunger puote…Ah vieni, nel tuo sangue, an opera taken from contemporary adaptations of Shakespearean Othello; the Messa di Gloria, a mass in nine movements composed for the Archconfraternity of Saint Luigi. Performed for the first time on 24 March 1820 in Naples, Rossini's work follows the traditional form of a "Gloria" mass, which frames the first two prayers of the Catholic mass, the Kyrie and the Gloria.
