Rome’s Fiumicino airport is once again at the forefront of protocols for flying as safely as possible. Starting from early January, passengers bound for New York on Alitalia Covid-Tested flights can present a digital negativity certificate from a COVID-19 rapid antigen test. The system is simple and makes travel procedures even faster: once they have downloaded the AOKpass app (developed in partnership with the ICC - International Chamber of Commerce) onto their smartphone or tablet and after taking the test at Fiumicino airport, passengers will receive the result via a QR code that will be scanned by the boarding attendant upon boarding.
The introduction of this new experimentation represents a further step forward in the path which began in September with Alitalia Rome-Milan Covid-Tested flights and which continued in December with the opening of “quarantine free” flights from the US. As an alternative to the self-isolation system, in the coming months passengers will increasingly undergo preparatory rapid or molecular tests before boarding, especially for long-haul destinations. With the progress of vaccinations, there may soon also be the opportunity to show a vaccination certificate in order to board safely and without incurring limitations.
