An ecstasy of shapes, light and colour: bernini's chapel of blessed albertoni restored

Cappella Albertoni ph. Soprintendenza Speciale Roma
depuis 10 Février 2020 à 31 Décembre 2020

The baroque masterpiece by Bernini, inside the Church of San Francesco a Ripa, returns to shine thanks to the restoration promoted by Soprintendenza Speciale di Roma and curated by Elisabetta Zatti.

Dedicated to Ludovica Albertoni, a Franciscan tertiary beatified in 1761, the Chapel is a scenographic composition of sculpture, architecture and painting by the great artist, realized when he was seventy-six: completed in 1674, it houses the splendid statue of the Blessed, an altarpiece by Giovan Battista Gaulli (called Baciccio) and a background with a magnificent golden decoration from which ten white putti rise.

In the center, there is Ludovica Albertoni's sculpture, depicted on a bed embroidered in marble, in the act of Christian ecstasy, a theme already approached by Gian Lorenzo Bernini with the Ecstasy of Santa Teresa in the Church of Santa Maria della Vittoria. The admirable drapery technique and the play of light convey the grandeur of the work.

The six-month intervention involved the cleaning from the dust and atmospheric particulate of the sculpture and other surfaces, except the Baciccio’s altarpiece; furthermore, the consolidation and chromatic balancing of the golden background and the stucco putti were also carried out.
