Museo delle Civiltà - Museo dell’alto Medioevo Alessandra Vaccaro

The itinerary of this museum, inaugurated in 1967, begins with the exposition of some finds from the late-ancient period, in particular three imperial portraits from the 5th-6th century AD.

The next two halls host a series of materials dating back to the Longobard period, like funerary objects, weapons and objects of various kinds. In the museum, however, materials aimed at illustrating the post-classical age are housed, through finds coming predominantly from Roman and central Italian contexts, among which stands a conspicuous group of marble reliefs from the architectural decoration of churches of the "Carolingian renaissance" era (IX-X sec.).

The museum also exhibits the extraordinary decoration in opus sectile (polychrome marble inlay), which adorned the representation hall of a monumental domus dating back to the 4th century AD and located outside Porta Marina in Ostia.

From September 2016, the Museum is part of the MuCiv - Museo delle Civiltà cultural pole, together with the Museo delle Arti e Tradizioni Popolari Lamberto Loria, the Museo d’Arte Orientale Giuseppe Tucci and the Museo Preistorico Etnografico Luigi Pigorini.
