10 febbraio - Giorno del ricordo 2023

Rome commemorates the victims of the foibe and the exodus of Istrians, Fiumans and Dalmatians from their lands after World War II, in the context of the complex story of Italy’s eastern border, with a program of initiatives until 20 February. The events are aimed particularly at young people, and are promoted by Roma Capitale, Assessorato alla Cultura with the coordination of the Cultural Activities Department, in collaboration with the Istituzione Sistema Biblioteche Centri Culturali, the Casa del Ricordo and with the associations ANVGD (Associazione Nazionale Venezia Giulia e Dalmazia) and the Società di Studi Fiumani - Archivio Museo storico di Fiume.

On Friday 10 February, at 10:30 a.m. the Biblioteca Ennio Flaiano will host a screening for schools of the documentary “Il ‘900 dimenticato: Istria, Fiume, Dalmazia. Le foibe e l’esodo dei giuliano-dalmata” followed by a series of readings from the book “Foibe, martiri dimenticati”. In the afternoon, at 3:30 p.m., the Casa del Ricordo will host the initiative “Amate sponde”, organized by ANVGD - National Association of Venezia Giulia and Dalmatia and the Society of Fiuman Studies. On Wednesday, 15 February, at 5 p.m., the conference “La tragedia dell’Esodo Giuliano-Dalmata e delle Foibe” will take place at the Biblioteca Aldo Fabrizi. On Monday, 20 February, at 10 a.m., the Biblioteca Laurentina will host a new meeting with schools entitled “Il Giorno del Ricordo. L’esodo a Roma: il quartiere giuliano-dalmata un esempio di Museo diffuso”. The commemoration ends on 20 Monday February, at 5:30 p.m., with a conference at the Casa del Ricordo on “La legge 92/2004 - I valori del Giorno del Ricordo: non dimenticare il dramma dell’esodo giuliano-dalmata”, with institutional guests and representatives of the ANVGD Committee of Rome and the Society of Fiuman Studies. The conference will be followed by a testimony from a Giulian-Dalmatian exile.

The program of initiatives is accompanied by a series of meetings of the reading circles of some Municipal Libraries: on Monday 13 February, at 5:30 p.m., at the Biblioteca Europea, the books “Foibe” by Raoul Pupo and “Foibe. Una storia d’Italia” by Joze Pirjevec; on 14 February, at 5 p.m., at the Biblioteca Giordano Bruno, passages from the book “Foibe rosse. Vita di Norma Cossetto” by Frediano Sessi, dedicated to the story of the young Istrian woman thrown still alive, at only twenty-three years of age, into the foiba of Villa Surani.
