The revamp of the Temple of Venus and Rome

With its over 200 granite and porphyry columns, it is the largest known sacred building of ancient Rome: dedicated to Venus Felix – goddess and mother of Aeneas, progenitor of Augustus and therefore of the imperial family – and to the goddess Roma Aeterna, sacred personification of the city, the Temple of Venus and Rome has finally returned to its former glory thanks to the collaboration between the Archaeological Park of the Colosseum and the maison Fendi, which contributed with a donation of 2.5 million euros.

The recently completed restoration work lasted 15 months and involved the architectural and decorative apparatus of the cells of the two goddesses, enhanced by a new lighting system. The temple can now be visited in its entirety and it is also possible to access the worship cell of goddess Rome, closed to the public for years. The restoration was also celebrated with a volume published by Electa, including a photographic report of the works, archive images and photos from the Fendi Couture Fall / Winter 2019-2020 show held at the site to pay homage to Karl Lagerfeld.
