Love, intrigue and sacrifice return to the Teatro dell’Opera di Roma with the splendid opera by Giuseppe Verdi, co-produced with the Sydney Opera House, with the direction, sets and sumptuous costumes by the Argentine Hugo de Ana.

The four-act melodrama, based on a libretto by Francesco Maria Piave, inspired by the play of the same name by Victor Hugo, was staged for the first time at the Teatro La Fenice in Venice on 9 March 1844 and has always been one of the great classics of the composer from Busseto. In the background of 16th-century Spain, between riots, cloak and dagger duels, and a tragic ending, Verdi's passionate and overwhelming melodies accompany the story of the bandit Ernani, in love - like the King of Spain Carlo - with Elvira, the bride-to-be to his uncle Don Ruy Gomez de Silva.

An international cast - Francesco Meli (Ernani), Evgeny Stavinsky (de Silva) and Angela Meade (Elvira) - performs the magnificent Verdi arias, accompanied by the Orchestra of the Opera House conducted by Marco Armiliato and the Choir directed by Maestro Roberto Gabbiani.
