La bohème

La bohème ph. Francesco Squeglia

Chi son? Sono un poeta. Che cosa faccio? Scrivo.
E come vivo? Vivo. In povertà mia lieta
scialo da gran signore rime ed inni d'amore.
(Rodolfo, Che gelida manina, Act I)

The evocative setting of the Circus Maximus hosts one of Giacomo Puccini's most beloved titles as part of Teatro dell'Opera di Roma Summer Season.

The masterpiece in four acts, on a libretto by Giuseppe Giacosa and Luigi Illica, based on Scènes de la vie de Bohème by Henri Murger and Théodore Barrière, made its debut in 1896 at the Teatro Regio in Turin under the direction of a young Arturo Toscanini.

It's 1830: students, seamstresses, bourgeois, shopkeepers, street vendors, soldiers and waiters move in the background of Paris. The opera tells the life and loves of a group of young people - the poet Rodolfo, the painter Marcello, the musician Schaunard, the philosopher Colline, the delicate flower embroiderer Mimì, and the singer Musetta - depicting an extraordinary portrait of the Ville Lumière of the time.

As already presented at the Baths of Caracalla in 2014, David Livermore signs the direction, set, costumes, and lighting design. Famous works of art of French Impressionism -  from Renoir to Monet - surround the protagonists, immersing them in a pictorial sequence, thanks to games of technology, video mapping, and projections.

On the podium, maestro Jordi Bernàcer. In the main roles, internationally renowned interpreters: Vittoria Yeo (Mimì), Piero Pretti (Rodolfo), Luca Micheletti (Marcello), Simone Del Savio (Schaunard), Andrea Mastroni (Colline), Sara Blanch (Musetta) and Domenico Colaianni (Benoît) and Alcindoro).
