50 years after the 1974 edition, made unforgettable by Pietro Mennea’s gold and silver medals and Sara Simeoni’s bronze in the high jump final, Rome returns to host the most important European athletics event, scheduled after the Paris 2024 Olympics. Supported by the Government, the Lazio Region, the Municipality of Rome, CONI, FIDAL and several bodies and associations, Rome’s candidacy prevailed over that of the Polish Katowice, the other city in the race, with the favorable vote of 14 of the 16 members of the European Athletics Association governing body. This will be the third time Italy has staged the now-biennial European Athletics Championships after Turin held the inaugural edition in 1934.

The 2024 European Athletics Championships will mainly take place in the famous Stadio Olimpico, holding up to 70,000 spectators: Rome stadium staged both the 1960 Olympic Games and the 1987 World Athletics Championships, as well as the annual Golden Gala meeting on the Diamond League circuit. Some of the most evocative corners of the city will stage the events: shot put event could be held in front of Colosseum, race walking is proposed to be staged alongside the ancient Baths of Caracalla after starting from the Arch of Constantine, while the half-marathon would commence and finish in front of the Vatican.
