Pincio

The promenade on the Pincian Hill lies between Piazza del Popolo, Villa Medici and the Muro Torto. It has a direct connection to Villa Borghese through Via delle Magnolie and was devised by the Napoleonic administration (which was established in Rome from 1810) to satisfy the many urban and social requirements of the city’s inhabitants: on one hand the organisation of Piazza del Popolo as the main entrance to the city from the north and its connection with the “upper” city of Trinità de Monti, the French Academy and the Via Sistina; on the other, the Enlightenment requirement to give the “second city of the empire” a feature designed for the recreation and health of the local inhabitants.
