On the occasion of Pentecost, which this year is celebrated on May 28, it is possible to witness, as per tradition, a shower of rose petals inside the Pantheon - Basilica of Santa Maria ai Martiri.
The word Pentecost literally means fiftieth and refers to the fifty days passed after Easter; it is therefore the solemnity that crowns the Easter period.
After the celebration of the Holy Mass, the Fire Brigade of Rome drops from the "oculus" at the top of the dome of the Pantheon, an opening 9 meters wide, thousands of red rose petals - about 12 bags - which end up dyeing the entire pavement of the Basilica, to commemorate the descent of the Holy Spirit and the birth of the Church. An event unique for its beauty and symbolism.
The ceremony, suspended for several years, was resumed starting in 1995 and is now an appointment dear to both citizens, pilgrims and tourists from all over the world.
