With its majestic and unusual architecture, its quiet avenues, and the trees and shrubs that grace its graves, the Verano Monumental Cemetery is the custodian of the stories of thousands of people, illustrious women and men who have made history or distinguished themselves in art, literature, and film, helping to shape the Italian collective memory.
To promote knowledge of its immense tangible and intangible heritage, once again this year the cemetery is hosting between the end of October and November a program of free guided and themed tours, itineraries and special events dedicated to the storytelling of this extraordinary open-air museum and to special anniversaries. A total of 45 events, some of which are enriched by the interaction between storytelling, acting, listening to music and the voices of the characters encountered along the routes.
The Passegiate tra I Ricordi - Walks among Memories organized every weekend from 26 October to 17 November are led by specialized guides and last about two hours: nine different thematic itineraries ranging from art to history, culture and landscape. On the occasion of the 19th Cinema Festival, on the last weekend of October the walks are dedicated to the history of Italian cinema, theater, music and entertainment with a special tribute to Marcello Mastroianni, on the centenary of his birth. In November, at the end of the program, the 100th anniversary of radio and 70th anniversary of TV offers the cue for a special walk among the Italian main TV personalities, with a special dedication to Maurizio Costanzo.
Technicians from the Garden Service of the Environmental Protection Department of Roma Capitale and art historians guide participants in the immersive treks in the nature and landscape of the Verano. The autumn program of events also includes film screenings and exhibition initiatives in the Mater Admirabilis Room at the Verano, as well as the classic Concerts at the Quadriportico performed by the Roma Capitale Police Corps Band, with a repertoire also dedicated to film music by Maestro Ennio Morricone.
