On 28thJuly 2010 Rome City Council gave its approval, in compliance with Law No. 122 of 2010, to the introduction of an accommodation tax on the city’s tourist services (Municipal Council Resolution No. 67 dated 28th/29th July 2010).
On 22nd December 2010 the City Council modified Resolution No. 67 raising the exemption age to ten year olds and lowering the tax on camp sites from 2 to 1 Euros per night for a maximum of 5 days.
On 22nd December 2010 the accommodation tax regulations secured approval with regards to every procedure for its collection and payment.
The fee, which is intended to provide funds for the city’s organisation of services, is aimed at ensuring that the standard of the tourists’ stay is both  highly efficient and of the best quality.
The fee came into effect on 1st January 2011 and is asked of anyone staying in any overnight accommodation inside Rome’s boundaries, with the sole of exception of hostels, at the end of each stay.
Please note that the fee is also asked of anyone who has booked or paid for the trip through a travel agency or tour operator and therefore pays by presenting a voucher at the reception desk.
Children under the age of ten years are exempt from payment.

Exemptions from payment of accommodation tax:
1.    Residents of Rome.
2.    Children up to the age of ten.
3.    Guests staying in youth hostels.
4.    The sick and persons caring for hospitalized patients (one carer per patient).
5.    Parents accompanying sick children under the age of eighteen.
6.    Coach drivers and tourist guides assisting groups organised by travel and tourist agencies (one driver and one tourist guide per 25 tourists).
7.    On duty members of the police force and armed forces.
8.     Accommodation of any type located in the enclave outside of the city of “Roma Capitale” called: Polline and Martignano territorial fraction.

Farm Inns             2 Euros per person per night max 10 days
B&B                2 Euros per person per night max 10 days
Rented Rooms             2 Euros per person per night max 10 days
Holiday Homes            2 Euros per person per night max 10 days
Holiday Apartments        2 Euros per person per night max 10 days
1, 2, 3-Star Hotels        2 Euros per person per night max 10 days
4, 5-Star Hotels            3 Euros per person per night max 10 days

Tourist services other than accommodation, such as the “Gran Turismo – Open Bus Stop and Go” public transport tourist service, the boats on the Tiber and seaside services, will contribute towards the City’s tourist service through a flat fee, to be paid by the licensee. The size of the amount due is to be based on the number of non-residents using the above-mentioned service.
City museums will contribute to the city’s tourist services by adding an extra One Euro to every admission tickets for non-residents.
