After four editions played in Lombardy, the main Italian golf tournament moves to Olgiata Golf Club in Rome. The history and tradition behind the Italian Open, one of the European Tour Rolex Series events, makes this tournament a very special and prestigious one: thanks to an agreement between Federazione Italiana Golf - Italian Golf Federation and the Lazio Region, Rome is going to welcome some of the world’s best golfers. In September 2022 Rome will also become the first Italian city to host the Ryder Cup, the golf’s greatest team event, which is played bi-annually between Europe and the United States, at the Marco Simone Golf & Country Club.
The Olgiata Golf Club has already been host to important events, such as two World Cups, many Italian competitions and the 2002 edition of the Italian Open, won by Ian Poulter who began here his extraordinary career, crowned by the victory of the last Ryder Cup with Francesco Molinari and the European Team. The Golf Club has a high-level 18-hole course redesigned in 2012, and a second 9-hole course. For the 76th Italian Open, a Commercial Village, a Hospitality Village, a Media Center and various facilities will be available to visitors and professionals. The programme includes numerous initiatives and activities to make the competition even more engaging and to help those approaching this sport discover the magic of golf.
The tournament field includes great champions such as Francesco Molinari (number 6 in the world ranking), Rio 2016 Olympic champion Justin Rose, world number 19 Paul Casey, and Thorbjorn Olesen, who won the 2018 Open. The total prize money amounts to $7 million.
Young people too have an active role: on the eve of the major tournament, the best under 14 talents of Team Lazio and Team Italia will face each other in a competition inspired by the Ryder Cup format, “The 3rd Junior Road to The 2022 Ryder Cup”.
