Dedicated in the name of Augustus’s beloved nephew, the Theatre of Marcellus still stands today with its well-preserved external arcade in the heart of the city, a few steps from the Capitol and the Mouth of Truth. For over thirty years, the theatre and the surrounding archaeological park, with the Temple of Apollo Sosianus and the Portico d’Ottavia, have been the host venue of the summer concert festival organised by the Tempietto association, thus establishing a continuity between past and present. Even twenty centuries ago the area was a space dedicated to sacred representations and rites, and the theatre itself was used for public performances for over four centuries.
Music returns in this iconic area marked by the imposing building, the diaphanous columns of the temple and the majestic portico this year too. Now in its 31st edition, the event, part of the Estate Romana promoted by Roma Capitale - Department of Cultural Growth, enjoy the collaboration with embassies, cultural centres, academies, conservatories, and music schools. The interpreters are selected among the best young talents worldwide, though not yet famous, supported by the best Italian artists. Thousands of musicians started their careers on this stage: today they occupy important musical and educational positions in many countries.
The variety of music is wide as usual: pianists, flutists, clarinetists, violinists and cellists present, with their fresh and enthusiastic performance, different pieces by famous or lesser-known music composers. The colourful musical swirl ranges from undisputed masters such as Schumann, Čajkovskij, Chopin, Beethoven, Brahms and Mozart, to famous opera arias such as Carmen, La Traviata, Il Trovatore, from contemporary music (from Stevie Wonder to Jobim) to mazurkas, waltzes, Argentine and Romanian dances, not to mention jazz and blues. Each concert is preceded by a guided tour inside the archaeological area accompanied by an expert.
