A new archaeological area inside a private residential lot that will, however, be open regularly to visitors: this is “The archaeological box of the Domus Aventino”, an innovative and virtuous project by the Special Superintendency of Rome and BNP Paribas Real Estate where archeology, architecture and technology come together with an unprecedented formula.

It all started in 2014 during the conversion of an old office building at the foot of the Aventine into a residential complex. The excavations led to very important findings, including materials and structures that span eight centuries of ancient Roman history: from the first terraces of the tufa bank of the Aventine dating back to the 8th century BC, at the time of the foundation of Rome, to the base of a 6th-century BC defensive tower up to the remains of a large Roman domus with different building phases and six layers of floor mosaics that testify to the renovations that took place in this place over two centuries, the change of tastes and the fashion of the times.

The multimedia exhibition curated by Piero Angela and Paco Lanciano, which uses video mapping and projections, tells the story of this precious corner of Rome. Visitors are be accompanied on a journey to back in time, engaging but faithful to history. The collaboration between the Superintendency and BNP Paribas Real Estate was not limited to protection and conservation only: from next November the site will be open to the public with guided tours scheduled twice a month.
