The Archaeological Park of the Colosseum resumes the guided night tours “The Moon over the Colosseum”, its very successful annual event. The new edition takes us to the discovery of the secret side of the largest ancient show machine, that warren of corridors, arches and passages that were originally covered by the arena floor and remained invisible to the spectators. Once populated by slaves, gladiators and wild beasts in cages, the underground levels have recently been restored and are now specially lit to make the journey into the bowels of the Flavian Amphitheater even more exciting and evocative.
Starting from the North archway, once the main entrance of the emperors, visitors can retrace the history of the topography of the Colosseum valley, enjoy a moonlight walk along the new walkway that crosses the undergrounds and learn more about the rules and functioning of the backstage of the great shows that took place in Rome, with an incredible technical apparatus consisting of hatches, hoists, platforms and lifts. The itinerary continues along the so-called “service gallery” passing in front of the Aedicule of the Way of the Cross rebuilt with the original 19th-century fragments and ends on the arena floor, with an extraordinary view of the hypogea and with a 360° view of the immensity of the stands that welcomed more than 60 thousand spectators.
