Quando le sere al placido chiaror d'un ciel stellato
meco figgea nell'etere lo sguardo innamorato,
e questa mano stringermi dalla sua man sentia...
(Rodolfo, Act II, Scene 3)
Love, intrigue and sacrifice return to the stage of the Teatro Costanzi with the splendid opera composed by a young Giuseppe Verdi, in a production directed by the enfant terrible Damiano Michieletto for the Zurich Opera House.
Based on the tragedy Kabale und Liebe by Friedrich Schiller, with the libretto by Salvadore Cammarano, the tragic melodrama in three acts was staged for the first time at the Teatro San Carlo in Naples on 8 December 1849 and has always been considered central in the stylistic evolution of the great composer.
Verdi's refined and pure notes accompany the intimate and tormented story of the two lovers, Rodolfo and Luisa, and their tragic, inevitably conclusion. Modernity and the psychological depth of characters are the features of this work, a perfect representation of two worlds that are irreconcilable. Only a feeling of pure love can unite the social differences, prevailing over hate and indignation.
