For the Love of Animals

From the fragility of the polar bear to the frowning expression of the gorilla, from the elegance of the chameleon to the pangolin wrapped around itself: the 22 sculptures by the Norwegian artist Elena Engelsen guide us with love and respect to the discovery of the animal world. Positioned around the perimeter of the Whale Room, the sculptures punctuate the route, culminating in the three columns (two cochlid columns that seem to pay homage to Rome, one that looks almost like a tribute to 20th-century modernist sculpture) topped by turtles, tapirs and antelopes to symbolically represent the sacredness of these species.

Each sculpture denotes a profound knowledge of the anatomy and morphological characteristics of the animals but what makes them alive are the attitudes distinguishing them, their expressions and states of mind. Using different materials, from marble to bronze, Engelsen expresses empathy towards all animals, from the smallest ones, such as snails and earth pigs, to vertebrates, some of which are threatened with extinction all over the planet. In a world where biodiversity is seriously endangered by human actions and the devastating effects of climate change, the exhibition reaffirms the need for the search for an environmentally respectful coexistence, encouraging us to take responsibility for the animal world and our common planet.
