The exhibition brings together for the first time in Italy fifty-five works in bronze, ceramic and resin by the Flemish sculptor, placed in dialogue with prints, tapestries and bas-reliefs by artists of the past such as Lucas Van Leyden, Hans Baldung, Jacques Callot, Barthel Beham and Paul van Vianen, active between the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, which inspired Creten and who reveal his concerns, from an artistic, historical, political and philosophical point of view.
Original and counter-current, Johan Creten has been able to distinguish himself since the 1980s for his innovative use of ceramics and is today one of the most important figures in the contemporary art scene. From the works on display, some of which were created specifically for the exhibition between 2019 and 2020, however, also emerge his technical ability and plastic sensitivity in the creation of monumental bronze sculptures, such as "De Vleermuis" (The Bat), presented in gardens of Villa Medici.
In Johan Creten's sculptures there is no reference to morality, sanction or censorship. The sins that give title to the exhibition are not the seven deadly sins: they are rather a mirror of the human condition, with its individual and social torments, with its fallibility and with that intertwining of desire and pain, hope and pain. , lust and anger, love and death that characterize our life.
