From a place of rare beauty, a dip in the 17th-century Rome. The young oriental plane tree recently planted in Villa Borghese is called Adonis Junior and it is a clone of a much older tree: it is theoretically only six years old, but its genetic heritage is over four centuries old. Its DNA is identical to that of “Adonis father”, one of the eleven surviving majestic oriental plane trees that in 1600 adorned the gardens of the villa built by Cardinal Scipione Borghese, Pope Paul V’s favorite nephew.

The villa’s group of plane trees is included in the list of Monumental Trees of the Lazio Region and is unique from a botanical, environmental and historical point of view. The reproduction of a tree of this species by cuttings is a real scientific feat: the success of the operation, which was also attended by representatives of the Botanical Garden of the Sapienza University of Rome, was made possible also thanks to the collaboration and support of the Amici di Villa Borghese association, in whose garden-nursery in Provence Adonis Junior grew up.

The newcomer in the park’s “Valley of the Plane Trees” represents an important first step for the protection, reproduction and conservation of the genetic heritage of ancient trees in Rome.
