If you have a day to spare, an outing to Tivoli, situated 25 km from Rome, is indeed time well-spent.
Once there, a visit to Hadrian’s Villa (Villa Adriana) is mandatory, the largest ever owned by a Roman emperor and one of the finest examples of Roman architecture. The complex, covering one square kilometre, encompassed an assortment of various kinds of buildings and constructions including palaces, baths, theatre, temples, libraries, state rooms and living quarters for slaves and guards.
Finally, let yourself seduced by the enchanting Villa d’Este. Built in 1550 by Cardinal Ippolito II d’Este, son Lucrezia Borgia and Alfonso d’Este, it is celebrated for its artistic elegance, although mainly for its countless highly entertaining fountains adorning the splendid garden.
