Virgile, dans son Énéide, raconte l’extraordinaire aventure des grecs qui, guidés par Evandre et par son fils Pallas, quittèrent l’Arcadie pour venir s’installer sur une des sept collines de Rome, le Palatin. Selon la mythologie romaine le Palatin serait en outre le lieu de naissance de Romulus et Remus, les célèbres jumeaux allaités par la louve, qui fondèrent Rome.

 

Entre légende et réalité, le Palatin demeure indubitablement un des lieux les plus suggestifs de la ville : c’est ici que se trouvaient autrefois les demeures des personnages les plus illustres de l’antiquité,  plus tard la colline accueilli les somptueux jardins de la famille Farnèse et aujourd’hui c’est un véritable musée à ciel ouvert. Les vestiges du passé sont disséminés dans un décor vert luxuriant qui recouvre toute la colline du sommet de laquelle on peut jouir d’une vue splendide sur toute la zone archéologique étalée à ses pieds.
