If we look for the largest of gladiatorial gymnasiums in Rome, we must certainly mention the Ludus Magnus built by Emperor Domitian (81-96 AD) in the valley between the Esquiline and Celio, an area already occupied by Republican and Augustan era structures.
The remains visible today, however, belong to a second phase of the monument attributed to emperor Trajan (98-117), in which the floor of the Ludus was raised by about a meter and a half.
