Vatican Gardens fill about two thirds of the surface of Vatican City. It is a place of rest and meditation of the Roman Pontiff since 1279, when Pope Nicholas III moved the papal residence from the Lateran to the Vatican.
The gardens can be visited with a tour group lasting two hours or an approved electrical bus.
