From 20 October 2017 to 11 February 2018 in Rome, at Palazzo Barberini will take place the exhibition Arcimboldo, organized by the National Galleries of Ancient Art of Rome and MondoMostreSkira, curated by Sylvia Ferino Pagden, one of the most important scholars of Arcimboldo and former Director of Painting at the Kunsthistorisches Museum Vienna. For the first time in Rome we will have the unique opportunity, for the difficulty of obtaining loans that justify the rarity of exhibitions dedicated to this artist, to see some great autograph masterpieces by Giuseppe Arcimboldi, known as Arcimboldo.

Author of the “composite heads” of fruits and flowers, artist of the mystery, which meant a truth but suggested another possible, Arcimboldo was formed at the father’s shop, as part of Leonardo’s followers. Esoteric and alchemical, he considered himself a poet and philosopher, engineer and inventor. One can say that he was the artist who invented the “bizarre” and “ridiculous paintings”, becoming one of the most significant painters of the international manieristic culture.
Rediscovered in the Thirties of the Twentieth Century, in the context of Dadaism and Surrealism, Arcimboldo quickly became the most important forerunner of contemporary art movements. He has been a genius of the Renaissance. Of that of Northern Europe and Milan, not certainly of the classical and Renaissance of Rome of the time.
